Gala celei de-a 87-a ediții a Premiilor Oscar acordate de Academia Americană de Film a început la Dolby Theater din Los Angeles, după ce invitații au defilat, rând pe rând, timp de două ore, pe covorul roșu și au pozat în fața sutelor de fotografi acreditați la acest eveniment și a celor peste 700 de fani care au reușit să obțină un loc în tribuna special amenajată la intrarea în clădire. Maestrul de ceremonii din acest an este artistul american Neil Patrick Harris, de 41 de ani, care are deja o bogată experiență ca prezentator de patru ori a premiilor Tony, cunoscute drept Oscarurile pentru teatru, și de două ori a premiilor Emmy, care recompensează cele mai remarcabile realizări din domeniul televiziunii.
